It’s hard to believe that it’s been 10 years since we started the Nethercote Produce Market (which then became the inspiration behind Sprout Eden!). All those years ago myself and Barbara Greenwood, another Nethercote local, created the markets to encourage growers of all sorts to supply the community with seasonal produce from their farms, gardens, or kitchens.
Our aim was, and still is, to simply get fresh local food onto local tables.
In 10 years, and 40 markets, we have
Made over 4,800 coffees
Served up over 3,800 pieces of cake
Sold about 6,000 raffle tickets; and
The Nethercote Residents’ Association BBQ estimate they have cooked about 2,400 bacon and egg rolls, and more than 3,200 sausage sandwiches. The Association raises funds for Nethercote Hall projects and has been a stallholder from the beginning.
As the markets are run by a wonderful crew of volunteers, this enables profits to be donated to local food growing initiatives. This market we are delighted to be supporting From Little Things Parklands, another community-minded not-for-profit. In addition to the wonderful morning tea stall, Sandy Huff from Floral Finesse has made us a special birthday cake for all to enjoy. We are very lucky to still have some stallholders who have been with us since the beginning, including Beth Deacon (Beth’s Pickles & Pates) and Ena Anderson (Ena’’s Pantry) who will be invited to cut the cake.
